In the book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, the boy named Max begins the story with an explanation about his mental status. He tells the reader he had never had a brain until he borrowed one from Freak. He goes on to explain that he had been a person that communicated by using his fists until Freak had come along. In the second paragraph he begins the paragraph by explaining that he was called Kicker when he was in the day care. He had gone to reside with his grandparents. During the time in daycare he would give anyone who touched him a boot. Therefore, the people in the day care center had started calling him the Kicker.
Max’s time in day care was the result of his grandparents hoping that they could calm him because whenever anyone tried to be affectionate with him he would squirm and fight himself away from them. His grandparents had hoped by Max being around other children, he would change. Instead, Max had invented games such as kick boxing and kicking teachers, and anyone he could kick.
