In Jubilee by Margaret Walker, many of the whites oppose educating the blacks because as Sir Francis Bacon said, "Knowledge is Power." With education, people can write notes, take notes of what people said and when, read the white people's communication, and in general, move into a more equal position with the white people because of their education. Education was valued as a way to distinguish those with the wealth to educate their children while the poor were uneducated. Once you teach someone to read and write, you can no longer take it away, and they have the power now to educate others whether you like it or not. Education was a way to move up economically, and it was better for the white people to keep the black people ignorant and working for them.
