Kevin is interested in King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table because the knights were, in his view, the very first human versions of robots. He passionately narrates to Max that King Arthur sent out the knights on dangerous quests like slaying dragons, but in order for such missions to be successful, the knights, merely human, had to be reinforced with metal armor. The armor made them invincible by giving them superhuman abilities, which guaranteed them victory in all their missions.

Kevin has a keen interest in robots and robotics and even refers to himself as Robot Man because of the leg braces he wears to aid in movement, just like the Knights’ metal armor that enhanced their abilities. Furthermore, he believes that the medical research unit at the hospital is developing a robot body onto which his identity will be transferred. However, after Kevin’s demise, Max sadly learns from Kevin’s doctor that there was never a robotic body under development at the hospital’s research center for him and that Kevin made up that narrative as a coping mechanism.

The book "Freak the Mighty" is about two boys who are opposites of one another.  Max and Kevin find that they have the ability to help one another and a friendship develops.

Kevin is a small boy who is very intelligent.  People think that he is a freak so he gains the nickname Freak.  Max describes Freak as a weirdo robot boy with blond hair.  He has a normal sized head but a small body that is twisted up.  He can not stand erect and he has to rely on crutches.

Kevin can not do many of the physical things that other boys his age are able to do.   He is very intelligent so he reads a lot.  For him mentally entering the world of the noble knights allows him a sense of escape and fulfillment.  He has given all the people in his world names from the Canterbury Tales.

Kevin identifies the knights as the first human version of robots.  He likes and is amazed that the metal equipment worn by knights was protective but was also made to counterbalance the design flaws in the human body that allow it to get hurt.

Kevin teaches Max to be a part of the chivalrous world of knighthood where courage and honor abound.
