The prevalence of skin cancer, eye cataracts, genetic damage, and immune system damage in humans has also risen since that time. Chlorine and bromine are two prominent examples of gaseous chemical compounds that have contributed to depleting the ozone in the Earth's upper atmosphere.

Recently, the international community has been working together to reduce ozone depletion, and the ozone has been recovering within the last two decades. In 2014, scientists discovered a small increase in ozone, which was due to cooperation under international treaties regarding the reduction of ozone-depleting chemicals. In 2016, scientists found that ozone concentrations had been increasing in the upper stratosphere since 2000.
