Why is Napoleon considered a hero in Animal Farm?

Napoleon is, of course, no real hero, but a tyrant who only makes life worse for the animals of the farm. However, the animals are brainswashed into believing that everything Napoleon says is true, so they accept Squealer's distortion of the facts: It was not Snowball who was the hero of the Battle of the Cowshed, but Napoleon (according to the later propaganda distributed by Squealer). Napoleon took all the credit for the Battle of the Windmill, claiming that it was a complete victory (despite the destruction of the apparatus) and

... creating a new decoration, the Order of the Green Banner, which he had conferred upon himself.

In truth, Napoleon

was directing operations from the rear...

and his wounding, in which he

had the tip of his tail chipped by a pellet...

probably came about when he was making a cowardly skedaddle for safety.
