Given the increased life expectancy and the newer ailments surfacing in last few decades, interdisciplinary medical care has emerged as a prime necessity. The same patients may be treated by a number of health care professionals, including dietitian, physiotherapist, nurse, social worker, therapist, etc. It is important for medical assistants to know the role of each of the relevant (depending on the diagnosis) health care providers and if they overlap the various treatments given to the patient.

A medical assistant works in conjunction with a number of health care providers and a knowledge of what they are up to is critical to patient's well-being and speedy recovery. Additionally, the medical assistant may work as a team member for a number of different health care providers while treating the same patient, thus necessitating the knowledge of other health care providers.
