Probably to reveal the vulnerability of the boss's life(inspite of him being the BOSS) ...the bright red colour of the carpet signifies blood and the white ring patterns symbolises wreaths, relating to the death of the son.The Electric heating definitely means an artificial source of sustaining his life when it had long been dead with the death of his son.

Personally i feel that mansfield adds details to the newly decorated office only to show how uncertain life can always be.The Boss does this with a clear intention of bragging infront of Woodifield but it is this discussion that brings up the topic of his son's death.
