Why is the field of science fiction largely dominated by men? Why do you think this is?

I would say the Harry Potter series is fantasy, not science fiction.  I would argue that there actually are a lot of women science fiction writers, including famous and well-respected ones.  Science fiction has often been considered a men and boys genre, so maybe that is why there have been fewer women, but I think that is changing.

I agree that it is tradition which has allowed more men to pursue study in science. The stereotype exists that men are good at science and math, while women tend to be better in the humanities. Motivation does play a large role (as pointed out by some of the previous posters).

What comes to my female mind when thinking about Science Fiction, I think of my mother watching Star Trek and the movie Back to the Future where the dad writes Science Fiction novels. Then I think of how most girls I know don't usually care for science and fiction in the same sentence, let alone movies.  But I was told when I was younger that I wasn't good at math; and, if I couldn't do math, I shouldn't try science. So maybe post #6 is right to a point about females not having a chance in scientific fields but also because they weren't motivated or encouraged to develop scientific skills. I've seen a major push recently for educators to encourage more girls into math and science, so maybe we'll see a boom in this area of literature for women.

I think that it is really mainly tradition.  Women had not been given much of a chance to get into scientific fields.  This likely would have prevented them from becoming as interested in writing about science fiction.  I think that women write plenty of stuff that could be science fiction but they do it more as fantasy than as sci fi.
