why don't Maycomb citizens sit on juries in their town?

cgarnerfl | Student

The majority of the citizens who live in town, have responsibilities that keep them from serving on a jury. Many of them are business owners who would have to close their store, and lose income, if they sat on a jury. Also, women are not allowed to serve on juries which eliminates a great number of townspeople. This is why the majority of jury members come from rural areas outside of the town.
