In the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry every year Uncle Hammer visits the Logans at Christmas time.  In Chapter 6, he has come for his visit in a new automobile.  He stays up talking with mama at night. The children adore him.

As they are preparing to leave for church, he notices that Little Man's coat is way too small.  He tells him to take it off.  He gives him a present that is a new wool coat.  Little man feels proud just like a big man.

Uncle Hammer learns about what had happened to Cassie and wants to go to the Simmses’ with a gun.  Case talks about white people and how they are nothing, but mama corrects her saying everyone is something.

Mama explains to Cassie that black people are expected to give white people respect, but it comes out more that they give them fear.  However, what they give freely to people of color is really respect.
