Ron is obsessed with Sarah because of the extent of her ugliness.

The first time Sarah Cole approaches Ron, she does so because her friends dared her to. Ron is a handsome man and Sarah Cole is, according to him, the ugliest woman he's ever seen. He does explain that there are uglier women but that the way they look is due to accidents or injuries. Sarah Cole, to him, is just naturally ugly.

This ugliness intrigues him from the beginning. He realizes that he's speaking to the least attractive woman he'll ever speak to in his life. He wants to treasure the moment so that it doesn't pass him by quickly and leave him with just the memory. This is where his obsession begins.

To keep the moment going, he talks to her about her life. He finds out more about her. Sarah becomes more real to him in these moments. He realizes that he doesn't want to talk about himself but only wants to learn more and more about her. When the night ends though, her memory fades from him and only comes back when they encounter each other again.

This time, he says that she seems even more grotesque than before and so he treasures their time even more. Later, he says he's determined to make love to her because she's homelier than any woman he's seen before. However, the reason is he obsessed with her is the same reason that he's embarrassed to be seen with her. It's why in the end he calls her ugly and tells her to leave even as, suddenly, she's the most beautiful woman to him in the world.
