While conversing with Mercutio on the way to the Capulet ball, Romeo responds to dancing with, " You have dancing shoes with nimble soles.  I have a soul of lead so stakes me to the ground I cannot move"(1.4.15-16).   Romeo comes across in 1.4 of the play as a defeatist, fatalistic, love-sick teenage boy.  He is a state of turmoil because of Rosaline's rejection.  Unlike Mercutio, Romeo is a true romantic - the whole ritual of courtship/love are of utmost importance.   Nowadays, Romeo could be labeled as "emo" boy due to his state of melancholy.
