Juana realizes that the pearl will bring her family nothing but trouble. It was supposed to give them financial security and the chance of a better life, but instead it's been much more of a curse than a blessing, and Juana wants it out of her life altogether. Kino will eventually come to the same conclusion, but not yet. Now, he's absolutely furious that Juana has thrown the pearl back into the sea. He responds by hitting Juana before diving into the sea to retrieve the pearl. This whole sorry episode illustrates just how much the pearl and all it stands for has corrupted Kino. He used to be a hard-working, peace-loving family man. But although he is still fundamentally a good person, his soul has been corrupted to a certain extent by the pearl, turning him into someone and something he really isn't.

Juana sees earlier than Kino that the pearl is evil. After Kino kills a robber who is trying to steal the pearl, Juana begs Kino to get rid of the pearl. Kino, still holding on to his dream that Coyotito will be able to go to school refuses. After the pearl buyers offer Kino a very low price for the pearl and Kino says he will go to the capital to sell the pearl, Kino is attacked again. Realizing the danger they are in, Juana once again tries to get Kino to throw the pearl into the ocean. Early on the morning they are to leave for the capital, Juana takes matters into her own hands and tries to throw the pearl back into the ocean. Kino strikes her face, kicks her, and rescues the pearl. The ultimate result is tragedy for the entire family.
