Hannah comes to expect that something out of the ordinary will soon happen when Gitl informs her that there is a plan and who is involved. She will not reveal what the plan is, but makes Chaya promise to remember if something happens to her and Shmuel because she is their only remaining flesh and blood. The plan was a plan to escape from the camp one night. Gitl, Shmuel, Yitzchak, and Hannah were all part of it.  Of course, it is not successful since only Yitzchak escaped. Chaya and Gitl were able to reenter the barracks offering an excuse to the blokova. The six other men were caught that night, beaten, and the next morning shot in front of roll call.
