In Chapter 8, Patria becomes more politically active. She goes to a meeting of the Christian Cultural Group and hears her minister preaching the church’s support for overthrowing the Trujillo government. The church opposes Trujillo on human rights and religious grounds, and also to maintain their own power within the state.
