In Rules, Catherine thinks that the cards that Jason has are not expressive enough and do not have the ability to express a full spectrum of emotions or ideas. This thought inspires Catherine to make a set of word cards that she presents to Jason the next time they are at the therapy office.

Jason is thrilled by the new cards, and Catherine gets another stack of blank cards in order to continue writing words and phrases to give to Jason so that he can express himself more fully when he is talking with people. Rather than stick to only positive messages, Catherine makes cards as she experiences different emotions and the result is a range of cards that express happiness, grief, anger, annoyance, sarcasm, and so on.
