Many psychologists think dreams are a way for brains to "decompress" from the day.  Dreams that appear to be random or enjoyable fall into this category.  Freudian and Jungian psychologists believe that dreams are a "window" into the soul.  Freud believed that dreams helped us deal with conflict, bad events, things we had no control over.  By discussing the dream with a therapist, you can unravel the meaning of the symbols that appear in your dream.  Jung went a step further, saying that some types of dreams (like sitting for an exam and realizing you have only 5 minutes to complete the whole exam) seem to be universal.  In other words, regardless of culture, certain themes appear everywhere.  This was proof, for Jung, that there was a general human spirit in each of us.
