According to the main character Gortsby, the hour of dusk is the hour of defeat for many people. During the hour of dusk, shady characters surface. It is the hour of defeat and those who live defeated lives come crawling out at dusk. During dusk, people will not notice them as much. It is the time of day that their humble attire will go unnoticed.

Gortsby sits on the park bench and judges the people who sit on the park bench next to him. He judges the older gentleman who sits down first. Gortsby imagines that the older gentleman is defeated. He seems depressed and lonely. Gortsby imagines that the older gentleman gets no respect at home.

Next, a younger man sits down. He seems depressed. He is dressed fairly decent, but when he sits down, he lets out an angry curse.

This is the time of day that men such as the young man come of hiding in order to trick innocent people out of their money.

The young man is a scam artist. He has chosen the time of day known as dusk to come out and try and trick people out of their money.

As it turns out, Gortsby falls for the young man's story when he finds a bar of soap next to the park bench. Gortsby chases after the young man and loans him money. Sadly enough, Gortsby will never see his money again. The young man has scammed Gortsby during the time of day known as dusk. Dusk is the perfect time of day to scam people. Gortsby is only one of many who get scammed during dusk.
