Why didn't the Indian want Omri to touch the horse?

In my copy of the book, the answer to this can be found on page 36.  This is the page that is the next to last page in Chapter 3 so you can find it in your own copy.

What Little Bear tells Omri is that the horse will be really afraid if Ormi touches it.  He says "You touch, much fear."

So instead, Omri finds a box that a Matchbox "lorry" (a British English word meaning "truck" in American English) came in.  He has Little Bear ride the horse in.  Then he gently picks the box up.
