Why didn't John want Norton to know about the L and J fund?

I have a completely different take on this one. John and Norton hung out together, but they weren't really friends. In Chapter 9, which John writes, he says,

"Lorraine told you she thinks Norton and I hate each other. It's true. Norton is low on the scale of evolution. . ."

John doesn't want to tell Norton about the L and J fund because he hates Norton and he doesn't want Norton to try and take advantage of the situation. John writes in Chapter 5,

"If he knew about it, he'd try to hustle in on the deal and he would never stop at ten dollars."

John didn't want Norton to know about the L and J fund because he was afraid that it would ruin their friendship.  John was afraid that Norton would no longer want to be friends them because he would know that they lied and not believe that they really wanted to be his friends.  John also believed that knowing the truth would cause Norton to see them as less mature than they wished to be seen as.
