The Gaither sisters are flying on their way to Oakland, California, to see their mother, Cecile. As their plane approaches San Francisco Bay, the pilot announces that on the left, as they circle the bay, is the Golden Gate Bridge.

On hearing this, Delphine is super excited; she wants to “squeal and ooh like a seven-year-old meeting Tinker Bell.” She's never actually seen the Golden Gate Bridge before; she's only read about it in books, along with other aspects of Californian history, such as the Gold Rush and Chinese immigrants building the railroads connecting east and west.

Delphine wants to take a look, but it's easier said than done, as she's stuck in a middle seat between Vonetta and Fern. Delphine encourages Vonetta to look at the Golden Gate Bridge, but Vonetta stubbornly refuses and remains in her seat. One can only presume that, like a lot of people, Vonetta has a fear of heights, and the sight of the Golden Gate Bridge from high above can only make things worse.

Despite the best efforts of Delphine, Vonetta never takes the opportunity to take a look at the Bridge. Her face remains stuck in her lap, and she sticks her thumb in her mouth and closes her eyes.
