The Pilgrims came to North America to start a new colony for several reasons. Religious freedom was the main reason why they came to North America. Their beliefs were different from those of the Church of England. They wanted to be able to freely practice their religion. By coming to the North America, they would be able to do this.

Before they came to North America, many had lived in the Netherlands. They experienced economic difficulties while there. Thus, they hoped that their situation would be better in North America. There was also concern they were losing their British way of life while they lived in the Netherlands. By coming to a new land where they could live as they pleased, they could preserve their way of life and religious beliefs and practices.
