In Greek and Roman religions, there were many gods and goddesses who had power over various facets of human existence, rather than one all-powerful god as in most present day religions. The people had to pray and make sacrifices to each one, for favors in the areas that that god/goddess controlled. When people sought to have someone fall in love with them, they paid homage to Aphrodite (Greek) or Venus (Roman).
