Hitler's popularity was never real. It was based on fear. People did not elect him the way we elect presidents. He wasn't a president, and Nazi Germany was not a democracy. He took over the government when his party gained power, which was the result of their ruthless treatment of enemies.

First of all, please realized that Hitler was never personally voted into his position as leader of Germany.  He was not voted in after a campaign the way that an American president is.  Instead, Hitler was appointed to be Chancellor of Germany.

As you can see in the "german federal election" link below, the Nazi Party only got 33% of the vote in the last free (relatively) election that was held in prewar Germany.  They actually won fewer seats in the parliament (called the Reichstag) than they had had before that election. Although they were still the largest party in the Reichstag, they never got anything close to a majority of the vote.
