In Chapter 12, Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to First Purchase African M.E. Church because Atticus has left for Montgomery, Alabama for two weeks. Atticus was called into an emergency session for the state legislature to help address Alabama’s budget issues. (12.154) Scout asks Calpurnia if she could take them to church with her on Sunday. Calpurnia agrees to take them, and the children are exposed to African American culture. Scout notices the difference in Calpurnia’s speech when she is around black folks, and learns many interesting facts about Calpurnia’s life. First Purchase African M.E. Church is quite different from the white church Scout and Jem are used to attending. There are no pianos, organs, hymn books, or church programs in Calpurnia’s church. Although Reverend Sykes preaches a similar message that Scout is familiar with, he directly calls out church members individually for their unholy behavior. The children enjoy their experience, and Scout asks to visit Calpurnia’s home after church is over.
