The Giver warns Jonas that it may be hard for him to have a spouse and a child, due to what he knows and the nature of his job. The person who keeps the memories knows so much, and knowledge can be a powerful thing. If Jonas had a family, he wouldn't be able to share this knowledge with them, and he would have to feed into his family's ignorance, and follow the rules of the society without complaint. Because Jonas knows the truth and what came before and what could be, this makes him different. He will never really fit into the society again. If he had a family, he would in a way be living a double life, knowing what he knows but having to pretend and hide things from his family.
