In "The Canterville Ghost", why did the author show Sir Simon's appearance with heavy metal chains around his body?

His wife's brothers punished Sir Simon for causing her death by chaining him to a wall and letting him starve to death. The chains are also with him in spirit since he is caught between the realm of the living and the dead. It is Virginia's prayer for him to be forgiven which finally sets him free.
