The boys inThe Lord of the Fliescan not keep the signal fire going, because it requires self-discipline and responsibility, both of which prove difficult for Jack's hunters.  They take the time, using the conch, to make all sorts of rules for the island,  When the discussion turns to making smoke signals to help with the rescue, all of the boys get so excited that they rush up to the top of the mountain, promptly forgetting the rules just made.  Jack and his hunters take responsiblity for keeping the fire going, but this task soon proves to be dull and time consuming.  Jack abandons the fire for the thrill of the hunt.
