Margaret Mitchell, whose great work of 1936, "Gone with the Wind" took her five years to write, never wrote another novel.  Born in Atlanta, Miss Mitchell grew up hearing of civil war battles at supper as her grandfather related them, did not know until she was a teenager that the South had actually lost the war. After her graduation from a local college, Mitchell imitated her suffragist mother by writing articles; she also wrote about the Jazz Age in her nonfiction for the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine.

Thus, her career in writing began in journalism, writing articles for the Atlanta Journal.  With encouragement, Mitchell began her tome and finished it in 1936.  She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize the following year, 1937

One of the first woman authors who had huge success with a novel, but never wrote another was the famed author of To Kill a Mockingbird--Harper Lee. Lee originally studied law, but moved to New York in order to pursue a literary career. In 1959, she accompanied Truman Capote to Holcombe, Kansas and worked as his research assistant for his fictionalized non-fiction In Cold Blood. Even though To Kill a Mockingbird won a Pulitzer prize and was adapted for the movies it was and is the only novel she ever wrote.
