Dr. Francis Townsend was a critic of the New Deal who attacked it from the political "left." That is, he believed that the New Deal did not do enough to help the poor. Townsend had a plan for helping both the poor and the elderly at once. He argued that people over the age of 60 should get $200 each month. The only rule that would apply was that they would have to spend it each month. This would get the elderly out of poverty and it would, at the same time, restore the economy because people would be able to get jobs making all the things the elderly people would want to buy with their money.
