Who was worse, Sanaubar in The Kite Runner or Mary Carson in The Thorn Birds?

Out of Sanaubar in The Kite Runner and Mary Carson in The Thorn Birds, one could argue that Sanaubar is worse, because she abandons her family only five days after her son Hassan is born. Like Sanaubar, Mary Carson is a manipulative, controlling woman, but she doesn't do anything quite as bad as that. Both women want freedom, but while Mary achieves freedom in controlling her family, Sanaubar sees it as only being possible outside the home.
