A Long Walk to Water is a 2010 fictional novel written by American author Linda Sue Park. It is based on a true story and centers around a kind-hearted, selfless boy named Salva Dut, who gets separated from his family during the Civil War in South Sudan and tries to survive on the streets. Salva is the main protagonist of the story. After years spent wondering around the world, Salva arrives in America and starts living with a different family. In an interesting turn of events, he meets his real father, who tells him that his family actually survived. Thus, Salva opens an organization named "Water for South Sudan" whose volunteers build wells to help those who suffer from thirst and starvation, similarly to how Salva suffered before he arrived in New York.
