Who was Lord Chelmsford?
The most famous Lord Chelmsford was a man named Frederic Thesiger who was a British military officer in the Victorian Era. Chelmsford is best known for having led the British troops in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Chelmsford was in command in the field when the British suffered their worst-ever defeat at the hands of a technologically inferior foe. This was at the Battle of Isandhlwana. Chelmsford then conducted a coverup to obscure the fact that he had made many serious mistakes that led to this loss. Chelmsford eventually led the British to victory in the war and was seen by many as a hero.
