In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, Junior reveals in Chapter 10 that when he was 12-years-old, he had a crush on a girl named Dawn.  Dawn was a powwow dancer, and Junior thought she was incredibly beautiful.  But Dawn did not seem interested in Junior, and Junior was a bit self-conscious about his physical appearance as he was often bullied because of some of his ailments.  He admits that he believed that Dawn was really out of his league.  Junior tells all this to his best friend Rowdy, who laughs and says that Dawn really was not worth the time anyway.  Rowdy tries to build up Junior's confidence.  Junior makes Rowdy promise not to tell anyone else about his past crush on Dawn, and Rowdy indeed makes--and keeps--his promise to Junior.
