To answer this question, it is probably best to start looking in chapter 7. It is in this chapter that Tim and his father begin their travels to Verplancks Point which is a trading post in New York. This is an annual outing for Tim's father, as they take a lot of cattle there.

Normally the trip is uneventful, but this year Tim and his father are confronted by some "cowboys" that threaten to kill Tim and his father if they don't abandon their cattle. Tim and his father are rescued by some Loyalist supporters.

Chapter 9 has Tim and his father returning home, and they choose to go back the way that they originally came. It was up for debate. They could have taken the longer way back to avoid the cowboys, but Tim and dad choose to take the shorter, riskier way because a winter storm is approaching.

Tim and his dad believe that they have a system worked out to avoid the cowboys. Tim's dad will ride up ahead as a scout of sorts, and Tim will drive the wagon. The method seems to work, but Tim soon realizes that his dad has not come back in awhile. Tim eventually comes across some ground that has a lot of tracks and mud mixed into the ground, and Tim figures that his dad has been captured and kidnapped by the cowboys from chapter 7. Tim will return home alone.

Unfortunately, Tim's father won't ever be a main part of the family again, as he ends up on a prison ship and dies after a cholera outbreak.
