In the novel, Night, the main character Elie finally ends up in the   Buchenwald camp which is part of the Auschwitz complex.  The doctor who greeted the arrivals at Auschwitz is the infamous Dr. Mengele better known as Dr. Death.  He was truly one of the worst of the Nazis as he had taken a pledge as a doctor to help and preserve life.  Instead, Dr. Mengele performed terrible experiments on Jews especially twins. He killed many people with  his experiments and often was at the train to decide who would die immediately and who would survive to be worked to death or used in his experiments One of his most famous experiments was to test the limits of human life in the coldest weather.  Some of that data still exists and only recently was removed from further use or study. Mengele escaped after the war and was never put on trial for his crimes.
