Christine de Pizan was a female writer from the Middle Ages who is best known for her works defending women and criticizing the way they were seen in their society. For this reason, some scholars think of her as a very early feminist.
Christine de Pizan was born in 1364 in Venice. She lived most of her life in and around Paris. Christine became a writer when she was in her mid-20s. She did so to express grief over the loss of her husband and then to try to earn a living for herself and her children. Her thinking and writing eventually evolved into what she is best known for--her writings on the way that women were treated in her society.
