Benjamin of Tudela was the author of a major travel diary that provides historians with a great deal of their knowledge of the Middle Ages.
Benjamin was a Jew from Tudela in what is now Spain. He lived in the 1100s. Benjamin is best known for having spent a great deal of time travelling in the 1160s. He traveled extensively in Europe and went to Asia and Africa as well. As he traveled, he kept detailed accounts of life in the places he visited. He is a major source for historians who wish to know more about life (both among Jews and non-Jews) in various parts of the world of the 1100s.
