It has to be Ivan, General Zaroff's assistant. Rainsford and Zaroff are the protagonist and antagonist, respectively. He is a Russian Cossack like Zaroff, but he's very large and brutal. He seems to enjoy killing, and Zaroff uses Ivan to kill if anyone decides not to be hunted.

Ivan definetly has to be the subordinate character. Rainsford has no other characters on his side.  We had to read that in my english class too; good story.
