Nyiko is the young girl that becomes the best friend of Gina.  She is a village girl.  Her friendship with Gina is important because it represents Gina's lack of prejudice.  Her skin color and her situation do not matter to Gina, who is adjusting well to village life, and she finds a kindred spirit in Nyiko.  Remember that Gina is the only girl in her family, stuck in the middle between Victor and Royce.  She needs someone to confide in.
