The story of an African American family and the racial prejudices they face in Depression-era Mississippi, author Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is narrated by the primary protagonist of the story--young Cassie Logan. The story is told through the mostly-innocent eyes of the nine year old girl, whose mother teaches at the local Negro school and whose mostly-absent father works in a different city. The family faces many struggles, financial and personal, during the course of the novel, and a defiant stand the family takes against buying from the local white-owned store puts them in further jeopardy. Cassie grows as the novel progresses, and she sees--and receives--first-hand some of the ill-treatment handed out to Negroes by some of the local white families.
