Mr. Nathan is Boo’s older brother who takes over the handling of the household when Mr. Radley, his father, dies.  The “apple didn’t fall far from the tree”, so to speak, because Mr. Nathan is just as mean as his father was.  His sole purpose is to keep watch over Boo and make sure Boo doesn’t cause any more trouble and embarrass his family.  Remember, Boo was sent to a state industrial school for hanging out with some other boys from Maycomb and harassing a “beadle” or official of the church.  He disgraced the family, and therefore, had to be controlled.  Mr. Nathan is also the character who cements up the knothole in the tree in which Boo has been leaving presents for Jem and Scout.  Mr. Nathan is an unsympathetic character who, unfortunately, let pride dictate his and Boo’s life.
