Who is more respected in Maycomb is a complicated question. Aunt Alexandra and Atticus are both part of the Finch family, a family with a long tradition. Family history is very important in Maycomb.
Technically, since Atticus and Alexandra are both of the same family, if Atticus was dishonoring the family, she would also be less respected due to her association with him.
While most people in Maycomb do seem offended by Atticus’s representation of Tom, they also realize that he was appointed as Tom Robinson’s lawyer and did not have a choice in the matter. People in the town do continue to show Atticus respect, such as when he shoots the mad dog.
The community as a whole is a victim of the times. Atticus possesses the knowledge, intelligence, and heart to embrace change. He is not afraid to stand alone and as a result becomes the conscience of the community. Although they whisper behind his back, most admire and respect him, including his sister Alexandra.
