Mr. Jaggers is a London lawyer who represents Miss Havisham and is also appointed to be Pip's guardian by Pip's benefactor. Jaggers is the person who first tells Pip that he has come into a fortune and has "great expectations." When Jaggers first approaches Pip and Joe with this news, he asks Joe his price for having Pip bought out of his apprenticeship as a blacksmith. Joe tells Jaggers that he doesn't want to be paid and only wants the best for Pip, and Jaggers can't believe that Joe isn't more mercenary—as Jaggers and most of the people around him would have been. Jaggers also tells Pip that he will be sent to Mr. Matthew Pocket, who will tutor in Pip the ways of being a gentleman.
When Pip goes to visit Mr. Jagger's offices, he finds them dark and full of odd objects, including two horrible-looking casts on a shelf, a rusty pistol, and a sword in a scabbard. Jaggers sits in a dark chair that makes Pip think of a coffin. When Jaggers walks down the street, his clients besiege him, but all he cares about is whether they have paid him. He is known for being a highly successful lawyer.
