Horatio is Hamlet's best friend and confidante. While Hamlet finds he cannot trust other people closest to him, such as Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Gertrude, and even Ophelia, Horatio is the one person who is not spying on him or in league with Claudius. He values Hamlet for his own sake, and this is priceless to the Danish prince.

Horatio's personality complements Hamlet's own in a few significant ways. First of all, he is level-headed, while Hamlet is passionate. His ability to see the ghost of Hamlet's father establishes that it is not merely a hallucination on the part of the frightened night-watch or the frenzied Hamlet. His stoic nature is a key part of his identity, to the point where he compares his own character to that of the ancient Romans. He is also fiercely loyal as a friend, even willing to kill himself once he sees that Hamlet has been mortally wounded.

Horatio's rationality and loyalty are why Hamlet urges him to stay alive to "tell [his] story." He believes that people will have the truth of what happened in Elsinore Castle distorted and that only someone like Horatio will be able to set them straight. Arguably, Horatio is one of the most tragic figures in the play, left behind without his closest friend and tasked with the burden of remembering these violent events.
