The true inventor of the tank has failed to be formally recognized. Some researchers attribute the first tank to Leonardo da Vinci (1487). Others attribute the first tank to H.G. Wells and his short story "The Land Ironclads" (1903).
Military attributions vary from French Captain Levavasseur (1903) to British Major W.E. Dohonoe (also in 1903). Another popular thought is that Richard Lovell Edgeworth is responsible given he patented the track system of the tank in 1770.
Perhaps the one most researchers support as the creator of the modern tank is Lancelot de Mole (an Australian in 1911).
