Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House of the Seven Gables" is a story of an ancestral home which has been cursed and has been a witness to mysterious deaths. It is in this backdrop that the story takes place and involves the residents of this household, some of whom carry secrets that are unfurled at the end. The house has a past of suspected witchcraft, secret dealings, haunting and deaths.
Although several characters have a strong presence in the story, including Miss Hepziah Pyncheon, Judge Jeffrey Pyncheon, Clifford Pyncheon, Pheobe Pyncheon and Mr. Holgrave; I believe Mr Holgrave to be the main protagonist here. He is an unsuspecting paying guest, full of energy and a lover of Pheobe. He is also revealed to be the last of the Maules and the secret keeper of the recess where the land deeds were stored. As the last of the Lyncheons, Pheobe and Holgrave's union reunites the two families that were torn apart by greed, power and the unethical conduct of the Lyncheons. Mr. Holgrave bears the Lyncheons no ill-will because of his love for Pheobe.
