Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House of the Seven Gables" is a very mysterious story.  The house is supposedly cursed by a wizard, and people have died from mysterious deaths that involve blood.

The story has many characters: Judge Jeffrey Pyncheon, who died on the day The House of Seven Gables was opened.  He is the one who sentenced the wizard to death.  Matthew Maule, the "wizard." Jaffrey Pyncheon and Clifford Pyncheon, decendents of Jeffrey Pyncheon.  Hepzibah Pyncheon, the current resident of the House of Seven Gables, and the young, Phoebe Pyncheon.

When Mr. Holgrave, a bachelor who rents out a portion of the house, falls in love with Phoebe Pyncheon, he becomes the protagonist of the story.  Though he goes by the name Mr. Holgrave, he is actually a Maule, and a descendant of the 'wizard' sentenced to death by Judge Pyncheon.  It's their love which reunites the families.
