George Willard, an eighteen-year-old writer for the local newspaper in the small town of Winesburg, Ohio, wants to become more than what his little town and his humble background offer. Even though his dislike of small – town life is apparent, may townspeople flock to him, seeing in him the hope of something better. He is interested in Helen White, but he is very upset that she has taken up with a college instructor from her college in Cleveland. Helen is the epitome of everything George longs for: beauty, intelligence, and, most importantly, sophistication.
