Fidel Castro was the man who led the revolution that overthrew Fulgencio Batista and, eventually, made Cuba into a communist country.  After the revolution, Fidel Castro became the dictator of Cuba.  He held on to that position until he became too ill to rule and gave up power to his brother, Raul Castro.  This was in 2008.

Fidel Castro was born in 1926.  His parents were wealthy, with his father owning a sugar plantation.  Fidel attended an elite boarding school for high school, where he became exposed to radical ideas.  He became politically active when he started to attend law school.

Fidel eventually came to lead a revolution against Batista, who was a dictator and quite repressive.  The rebellion succeeded, and Batista fled Cuba on January 1, 1959.
